Some design projects touch your heart more deeply than others…..this was one of them.
When my client reached out, it had been almost a year since she experienced the heartbreaking loss of her husband. She wanted to transform the bedroom that they once shared into a space that felt calm, peaceful and honored his memory. Together, we set out to create a sanctuary that feels full of heart while helping her and her children rest, heal and feel connected to the love they’ll always carry with them.
THE BEFORE
A spacious, lived-in bedroom with dark furnishings and lots of potential.

THE VISION…..Comfort, Connection and Meaning
My goal was to help my client rediscover beauty, comfort and connection in the space she and her husband once shared. She envisioned a room that felt light, restorative and enduring - a peaceful escape that balanced beauty with everyday practicality.

PROJECT DETAILS
From the beginning, this design was as much about emotion as it was about aesthetics. I wanted the space to feel grounded yet uplifting; a place where my client could cherish memories without being surrounded by sadness.

I began with the color palette. Blue is known to evoke calm so I chose soft, muted tones to bring a sense of peace. Layering in warm neutrals and natural textures added comfort, warmth and a lived-in coziness that felt welcoming for her and her children.
To create an even deeper sense of calm, I kept the walls light and opted to paint the ceiling in a soothing blue-gray tone instead. This subtle shift visually lowers the height of the room, making it feel more intimate and comforting.

Because relaxation was key, I incorporated easy-care materials and textiles that are both beautiful and practical. It was important to include pieces that can be enjoyed every day without worry, such as a machine-washable rug and soft, durable fabrics.
Next, I wanted to elevate the space into something that felt inspiring. I wanted the room to be reminiscent of beauty and possibility. I added custom millwork to elevate the builder-grade walls and chose a two-tier wood and gold chandelier that introduced elegance while maintaining the relaxed atmosphere she desired.

Finally, the space needed to hold meaning. My client has such a deep love for her husband and I wanted that love to always have a quiet presence in the room. I incorporated sentimental details like a framed poem, a gallery wall for family photos, a small decorative box for cherished notes and vintage-inspired trunks to store keepsakes and mementos. I also suggested creating a blanket or pillows from favorite shirts to snuggle with each day for even more comfort and connection.

THE RESULT
This project wasn’t just about creating a beautiful bedroom. It was about helping someone reclaim peace and joy after loss. Each element was chosen to bring comfort, balance and emotional connection to daily life.
Now, this primary suite tells a story of resilience and love. It’s a space where my client can exhale, find calm and create new memories with her children — a true reflection of healing through design.
A special thank you to my client for giving me the opportunity to help with this project and allowing me to share her story.
A home that feels good supports the life you’re meant to live. If you’re craving more beauty, peace and purpose in your surroundings, let’s create a space that nurtures your inner being.
Until next time, take care of you. :)
