Should You Paint, Restain, Reface or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets?

Today in my first What Would Val Do? segment, I am breaking down one of the most common questions homeowners ask when trying to update their kitchen on a budget.

Karen from Liberty, Kentucky recently wrote in with a design dilemma. She wanted to refresh her kitchen and bring in more of a modern farmhouse feel, but she was unsure where to start.

Below is Karen’s kitchen as it currently looks.

Karen initially considered stripping and restaining her cabinets to create a more natural farmhouse look. At first glance, this sounds like a good idea. But when budgets are tight, it’s important to look carefully at the return on investment.

In many cases, restaining old cabinets isn’t the best use of money. Here’s why……

The Challenge with Restaining Kitchen Cabinets

Stripping paint from cabinets is extremely labor intensive. Cabinet doors must be removed, chemically stripped or sanded, repaired, stained, sealed and then reinstalled. Labor costs can creep up quickly.

The results can also be unpredictable. Cabinets that have been painted for many years often absorb stain unevenly, which can create a blotchy appearance. In some kitchens the cabinet boxes and cabinet doors are made from different wood species, which means the stain may not match from piece to piece.

In Liberty, Kentucky Karen’s estimated cost to strip and restain her cabinets would likely fall somewhere between $1,200 and $3,500, depending on whether she hired a local handyman or a professional refinisher.

PROS: Maintains a natural wood look, lower environmental impact than replacement

CONS: Results can be uneven, very labor intensive so cost can get high, cabinet style and layout remain outdated

OVERALL VALUE: Often the least value for the money

If Karen decides to go this route, I’d recommend a mid-tone stain that pulls the cooler tones from her flooring to balance the visual weight of the room and reduce the intensity of warm, rich colors in the floor and countertop.

Other Ways Karen Could Update Her Cabinets

OPTION 1 | REPAINT THE CABINETS

Karen could repaint the cabinets for approximately $800 to $1,500 for a standard paint job, or $3,000 or more for a high-quality sprayed finish.

If she repaints them, I’m recommending Sherwin-Williams’ Accessible Beige for the cabinets and Shoji White for the walls.

PROS: Lowest cost option, biggest visual improvement for the money, updates the color palette

CONS: Cabinet style and layout remain the same

OVERALL VALUE: Best short-term value when the budget is limited

OPTION 2 | CABINET REFACING

Refacing typically costs $2,000 to $4,500 for laminate or thermofoil finishes and $5,000 or more for higher quality wood veneers.

PROS: Creates the appearance of new cabinets, updates door style

CONS: Cabinet interiors, layout and storage remain unchanged

OVERALL VALUE: A good cosmetic upgrade, but still a mid-range solution

OPTION 3 | REPLACE THE CABINETS

Replacing the cabinets with budget-friendly ready-to-assemble cabinets would likely cost Karen $3,000 to $5,000 installed, including removal and disposal of the existing cabinets.

PROS: Brand new cabinets with updated style, layout improvements possible, longest lifespan, increases resale value

CONS: Higher upfront cost

OVERALL VALUE: The best long-term investment

Designer Insight

Many homeowners assume refinishing cabinets is the most budget-friendly way to update a kitchen. In reality, the labor involved often makes it one of the least cost-effective options. When cabinets are already painted or when the cabinet boxes and doors are different wood species, staining can produce uneven results.

In situations like Karen’s, I usually recommend saving that money toward a modest renovation and making a few strategic updates in the meantime. This approach often creates a better kitchen in the long run.

What Did I Recommend?

Instead of spending thousands refinishing cabinets that may eventually have to be replaced, I recommended starting with a few thoughtful updates that would dramatically improve the space while protecting Karen’s renovation budget.  Here’s a breakdown of what I suggested.

Step 1 | Start With What You Have

Karen’s kitchen actually has a solid foundation. The layout works well, the appliances are in good condition and the cabinets are functional.

The biggest visual issues are clutter, wall color and a few outdated finishes.

Before spending any money, I always recommend starting with the simplest step.

Remove the clutter.

When countertops are cleared and décor is simplified, the kitchen immediately feels calmer and more spacious. Sometimes the first design improvement costs absolutely nothing.

Step 2 | Make Small Updates That Create the Biggest Impact

Karen’s budget is limited right now, so my goal is to create the biggest improvement for the least amount of money.

Instead of investing thousands into refinishing cabinets, I recommend saving that money toward a modest renovation later.

In the meantime, these small updates can dramatically refresh the space.

  1. Paint the Walls

A soft neutral instantly brightens the room and reduces contrast between the walls and cabinetry.

In Karen’s kitchen, Sherwin-Williams’ Shoji White or White Duck would work beautifully for the wall color.

These colors soften the space and help the existing cabinets blend more naturally with the room.

2. Clean the Cabinets

Older cabinets often accumulate years of grease and residue. A thorough cleaning can make a surprisingly big difference.

I personally love using Norwex cloths, but a simple solution of warm water and white vinegar with a microfiber cloth also works well.

3. Update Cabinet Hardware

Cabinet hardware is often described as the jewelry of the kitchen.

Karen has already selected new cabinet pulls, which will immediately make the cabinetry feel more updated.

4. Improve Lighting

Lighting dramatically affects how a space feels.

Karen has already purchased updated lighting, which will help modernize her kitchen and improve functionality.

5. Add A Few Thoughtful Furnishings

Karen is already on the right track. A few intentional, affordable items will really help to modernize the farmhouse aesthetic she desires are:

New dining chairs – currently $69 each

New dining table – currently $325

Washable kitchen mat – currently $20

Drilless woven window shade – currently $55

Before You Invest in a Kitchen Renovation

Before committing thousands of dollars to cabinet refinishing or replacement, it helps to step back and evaluate the kitchen as a whole.

I typically look at three things when advising clients:

• Does the layout work?

• Are the cabinets structurally sound?

• Will the investment significantly improve the overall space?

If the layout and cabinets are functional, small improvements like paint, lighting and hardware can often buy homeowners several more years before a full renovation is necessary.

This approach allows you to enjoy your kitchen now while saving for a more thoughtful renovation later.

The Long-Term Plan

When Karen is ready for a larger renovation, here is the approach that will deliver the best long-term value.

  1. Install stock cabinets such as the Lowe’s Reliabilt Collection or something similar.

  1. Add a lighter countertop (quartz would be ideal, but laminate can still look beautiful if on a tighter budget).

  1. Install a classic white subway tile backsplash.

  1. Paint the walls Sherwin-Williams’ High Reflective White to coordinate with the subway tile and upper cabinets. Doing a two-tone kitchen will help keep this kitchen feeling more spacious against the darker base cabinets and hardwood flooring.

  1. Replace the range vent with a clean stainless steel hood.

  1. Add crown molding to the upper cabinets for a more finished look.

The furniture and décor updates I’m recommending, along with the cabinet hardware and lighting Karen has already selected can still work beautifully in the future kitchen, so those investments will not be wasted.  And, if Karen decides she wants nicer, higher quality furniture and décor once she has saved for her kitchen renovation, she can purchase them without much loss since the items I’m recommending are super budget-friendly.

This strategy allows Karen to improve the kitchen now while saving toward a renovation that will deliver a much stronger return on investment.

Why This Approach Matters

Design isn’t just about making a space look beautiful. It’s about helping people make thoughtful decisions with their homes and their budgets.

By focusing on small improvements now and saving for a better renovation later, Karen can enjoy a more welcoming kitchen today while protecting her long-term investment.

Sometimes the best design advice isn’t about spending more money. It is about spending it wisely.
