Well alas; summer is over, but on the bright side that means that all things pumpkin are making their way back into our lives. (Insert happy dance)! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE pumpkin! Pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin lattes and the colour pumpkin itself. There’s something about the rich saturation of pumpkin orange that makes me feel happy. It’s such a warm, friendly colour that is engaging to the point of not needing to beg for company. It’s so appropriate that it’s the colour most used at a time of year when we give thanks for all of our family and friends.
With the fall season upon us, it’s time to change up our décor to create an inviting space for family and friends to gather. Here are 10 of my favourite décor items for fall.
#1 - Wreaths
They say that the front door is the smile of the home. What better way to greet your guests than by hanging a beautiful fall themed wreath? Whether real or artificial, wreaths offer so much beauty and personality to doors, mantels and even windows. With so many options to choose from, you are bound to find one that is perfect for your home and the feeling you want to convey within your space. One of my favourites is this Fall Berry Wreath by Alcott Hill.
#2 - Pumpkins and/or Squash
This is a no-brainer really, but allow me to state the obvious; using pumpkins or squash to decorate the inside and outside of your home add notable vibrance to any space. And, the fact that they are inherently fall vegetables (or fruits if you want to get technical), make them a clear choice when it comes to fall décor. Check out these Faux Pumpkins to liven up your space.
#3 - Accent Pillows
One of the easiest ways to switch up décor in a space is by changing out accent pillows. For fall, you’ll want to stay focused on pillows that exemplify the bright orange, red and yellow colours of tree leaves or for more subtle designs, concentrate on pillows with messaging that is representative of giving thanks, the fall season in general and even Halloween. You can find accent pillows pretty much anywhere, but I loved this "Give Thanks" pillow by Adreannie found on Amazon.
#4 & 5 - Nature Themed Décor
Nothing says fall like the leaves changing colour. You can use bright coloured or muted options of leaf décor to bring in the essence of fall. Fruit, birds, flowers and foliage can also be used on porches, mantels, tables or for centerpieces; the possibilities are truly limitless. I opted for these metal leaf stands and these wood bird figurines for a more neutral look.
#6 - Throw Blankets
Who doesn’t love to cozy up under a warm blanket on a crisp fall day? I know I do! Throw blankets are a wonderful way to add a pop of colour or texture to your fall decor. You can add hints or colour, lots of colour or little to no colour and still achieve the desired look. Choose from printed or plain, cotton to wool, light to heavy, the choice is yours – just be sure that you choose a throw that helps to keep your design cohesive. Normally I'd be prone to go for something bright orange, but I just really loved this linen throw. The two-toned knit went perfect with the rest of my decor selections so I couldn't resist.
#7 - Woven Baskets
Woven baskets are an excellent way to add character and texture to a space. Their natural fibers are a great way to bring nature into a room, which I am personally a huge fan of. And, as a bonus, they offer a perfect place to store your pillows and throws or hide away toys or other miscellaneous items that you don’t want showcased while entertaining. Check out this Mulhouse Basket by Lark Manor. It's the perfect size for almost any living space.
#8 & 9 - Serveware and Glasses
Another way to infuse fall into your space is by using fall, Thanksgiving or Halloween themed serving dishes, trays, chargers or glasses. Aside from authenticating your space, they are a great conversation starter. Serveware and glassware can be used to accent your existing fall décor by using colour and texture or it can be used more deliberately to convey a message or emphasize your desired theme. I'm in love with these "Thankful" stemless wine glasses and this serving dish by Enrico is just gorgeous.
#10 - Table Linens and Napkin Rings
Table linens are one of the most effective ways to bring beauty to a dining area. There are literally thousands of options to choose from for table cloths, runners, place mats, napkins and napkin rings. When dressing your table think about the mood you want to create and who will be at the gathering. For example, you might choose place mats over chargers if children are at your gathering. Or, if you’re having a couples night in, you may want to consider linens with funny or witty expressions on them. The options are endless – just be sure to put some thought into your choices. Today, I'm suggesting Champagne Foiled Napkin Rings to coordinate with my favourite fall choices, while adding a little sophistication.
#11 - Candles
Okay, I know I said 10, but I can’t leave out candles. Candles are one of my absolute favourite ways to create ambiance. They provide softness and romanticism. They are elegant, but not pretentious. And, maybe one of the best reasons to love candles is that everyone looks good in candlelight – so what’s not to love? For fall, consider white, ivory, brown, orange or red candles. And, if you really want to reel your guests in, consider choosing candles with scents. Pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, gingerbread and fireside embers are some of my favourites. Be sure to remember the candle holders as well. They add essential character for completing your design. I am suggesting a natural, wooden 3-piece candlestick set this time around, but you can choose whatever works for the atmosphere you are trying to create.
So that’s my list of 10, plus one bonus sure-fire way to create a fall themed space. I hope this helps you to create your most appealing and inviting space yet.
